KINFRA to develop rural garment parks

Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) will establish a series of rural garment parks in Kerala with the first one coming up in Thiruvambadi in Kozhikode. By the first week of next month, the foundation stone for commencing civil work for setting up the park will be laid.

Currently Kinfra has identified five locations where the rural garment park will be set up. This project was declared in the 2010-11 budget. Considered to improve the textile sector, this new project will also provide bulk employment opportunities for the rural folk.

A grant of Rs 25 crore from the state government is said to fund the entire project. While the minimum land requirement for setting up the park is three acres, respective local panchayats and other governing bodies have been urged to give this land without any cost.

KINFRA will design the parks to include in it modern facilities to help private entrepreneurs establish apparel making units which can generate employment for about 300 rural women. For expenses towards their training purpose, government will also be providing the due subsidy.
