Sri Lanka's leading apparel exporter Brandix has finally opened its long-awaited apparel park in India. The Brandix India Apparel City (BIAC) covers a 1,000-acre site near the port city of Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and will eventually house 20 garment factories, three fabric mills, eight accessories manufacturers and a finishing plant.
The zone is eventually expected to generate around 60,000 jobs. Brandix will set up a lingerie manufacturing unit and a fabric plant inside the park. "It will consolidate the South Asian region's strength as a major apparel hub," Brandix group CEO Ashroff Omar said.
The idea is to use BIAC as a manufacturing centre while Sri Lanka will function as a regional sourcing hub, hosting all front-end activities like product development and design.
Brandix says the vast pool of synergies between Sri Lanka and India "will add infinite capacity and depth to the South Asian region at a time when
economies of scale are critical to growth."
The venture is a partnership between Brandix as the main shareholder and CMT Group of Mauritius, Pioneer Elastics of Hong Kong, Brandot International
of the United States, Quantum Clothing of Britain and the Galleon Fund of Sri Lanka. It is one of the largest textile industry-specific special economic zones in the world, and the only one of its scale and concept in South Asia.
