Union textile minister Dayanidhi Maran has expressed concern over the rising prices of cotton yarn and its impact on the handloom and readymade garment sectors.
He said the government will take appropriate measures to ensure that yarn is available at affordable prices to these two vital sectors. Mr Maran said this on the sidelines of an exhibition cum conference.
Cotton yarn prices have gone up by 30 per cent in the last three months with the latest price increase brought in to effect on April 1. The members of Tirupur Exporters’ Association have even gone on a fast against the decision.
Mr Maran said that since China was not promoting handlooms in a big way, the sector could prove to be a huge strength for India as it gives craftsmen the opportunity to create unique designs and sell worldwide without competition.
He said since Tamil Nadu has one of the best managed handloom sector, the government will set up a Chennai Haat on lines of the Delhi Haat. This will help the weavers to display their wares to buyers directly and get remunerative wages for their efforts.
